!! The term originally alluded to cut-and-dried herbs that were sold in the herbalists’ shops ofEngland, which were more medicinally effective dried than fresh. It was used in a 1710 letter to the Rev. Henry Sacheverell: “Your sermon was ready cut and dried,” meaning it had been prepared in advance, lacking freshness and spontaneity.
!! One can imagine cutting a piece of meat into strips and drying it in the sun that turns them into jerky.
>> You have cooked these three dishes for seven consecutive days, which is really cut and dried.
>> Every Valentine's Day, you always go to the flower shop to buy me almost the same kind of red roses, which are expensive and pretty cut-and-dry!
