Settle a Score——算帳

    !! The usual way of keeping count in the old days was to score notches into wooden rods called tallies (hence the verb tally, meaning to count). Tallies were usually split in two lengthways so both parties had an identical record. From about 1400, score was also the word for a record, an account or a bill, the total of the score marks on a tally.“Settling a score” is now used in the figurative sense of taking revenge on somebody.

    過去，常用的計數方法是在稱為“計數”的木桿上刻上刻痕（因此動詞tally的意思是計數）。記錄棒通常分成兩部分，因此雙方都有相同記錄。從大約一四○○年開始，score也是記錄、帳戶或帳單的單詞，是記錄棒上分數標記的總和。現在，“算帳”是比喻報復某人。

    父親終於找到並殺死了搶劫時殺死兒子的小偷，算清了困擾他兩年的一筆帳。

    在別人冤枉了你後，不斷地思考如何報復是浪費時間，也是浪費生命——最好原諒並將之忘記。
