    !! Bells and whistles were literally used in the middle of the 19th century for different signaling purposes of streetcars, steamships, but especially railway locomotives. They both were considered necessary parts of their equipment, though not strictly essential.

    鈴和哨子在19世紀中期被用於街車、蒸汽船，尤其是鐵路機車的不同信號用途。它們都被認為是其設備的必要部分，儘管不是絕對必要的。

    !! In the old days, a musical instrument like an organ was usually augmented with all sorts of sound effects such as car horns, sirens, bells and whistles. They were used to accompany silent films. Organs often had toy counters with 20 or more noisemakers on them. The phrase has been used usually in a derogatory way.
